𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿!!

This is the 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱. His absence is a profound blow to indie cinema everywhere.The Sundance Kid is gone, but his spirit will forever remain in every corner of Park City, Utah.Now, as the festival nears its close—and its final year in Utah—that legacy feels especially tangible to all who have experienced it.

𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻, 𝗦𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗿:

• Films like The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist are proving that the most compelling tech stories are about our anxiety, our hope, and our humanity.
• Seeing 100-year-old Egyptian Theatre rafters shake during a 4K restoration of Little Miss Sunshine is the reason we show up. Human connection is the original viral content.
• Emotional premieres like Josephine that literally moved audiences (Channing Tatum admitted he teared up multiple times).  
• Voices tackling real-world pain at the Run Amok premiere, Patrick Wilson used his platform to call out gun violence and urge us to listen to those most affected.  
• A high-profile protest (“Sundancers Melt ICE”)  
• And yes, of course the “AI vs. Human” debate in film– That seems to be over according to all accounts of many Indie film makers at the festival, speaking of how empowering AI has been for them!

Adobe even reported that 𝟴𝟱% 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 used AI-enabled tools in their workflow as collaborators in editing, ideation, and other post-production processes.

𝗦𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 + 𝗔𝗜 ” 𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝘀!

And while we mourn the loss of Robert Redford, there is also a fascinating symmetry in where we stand today.He was the ultimate supporter of the “𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗴” voice. Hence the festival– and its very existence!And in that spirit, I can’t help but think he might really have championed this new era.

But..It’s important to remember…
𝘛𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸. 𝘗𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘥𝘰.

You could never "prompt" a machine to have the grit, the intuition, or the 𝗿𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱.

But if Redford’s mission was to empower filmmakers to create and showcase their work, then AI is the most powerful “enabler” we’ve seen in a long while!

Even though I wasn't at the festival– I have followed it for decades! It has been the heartbeat of indie film for nearly 50 years.

So as we toast the man who started it all, and to the infinite possibilities these new tools offer the next generation of storytelling rebels – You might want to go watch a Redford film today– 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘈𝘐 𝘵𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘵𝘰𝘰!:)
